Do you have to be a lawyer nerd to join Mock Trial?

This blog post was written by junior Sam Schoen for the “Why MMT?” series in Fall of 2023.

One of the most common perceptions about Mock Trial from new members is that it’s a strictly lawyer based activity for the rule-lovers of the world to fight each other on who knows them best. While we do have that riveting action going on, I promise that Mock Trial is so much more.

No Experience Necessary!

For one, you truly DO NOT need ANY experience with mock/law/debate to join. I can personally attest as someone who looked up “the stages of a trial” on the walk to my interview. Part of the experience and charm of Mock Trial is that you get to learn alongside your class with the help and support of returning members.

The Creativity Side of Mock

Secondly, Mock is actually more about performance than it is about law. For each trial, we try to make our witnesses entertaining by building real and exciting characters. If you are someone who loves to act, develop characters and stories, or work in improv, then this is the place for you! We have had so many members who spend all of their time playing hilarious witnesses and never put on a fancy suit.

In short, we have a lot more going on around here than just objections. If your interested in growing your public speaking and performance skills or just enjoy being creative, then the legacy just might be for you :)

Here is one of our current members, Natalie Schory, dressed up as some of her iconic characters. She spends her time thinking outside of the box and being creative which really brings her witnesses to life.
